One of the best ways to spend a relaxing morning on the islands is to visit the hot springs on Nevis. The hot spring originates from the volcano and the hot healing waters were adopted by the Nevisians as the local baths. The former bath house is in ruin and although it is still standing it would be dangerous to enter the building after it was damaged by a hurricane.

History of the Hot Springs

Nearby on the site is the famous Bath Hotel, built in 1778 the Bath Hotel in Nevis was the first luxury hotel for the rich and famous in the West Indies. The caretaker of the springs John Huggins was said to have constructed the hotel and the baths out of goodwill for his fellow creatures and the accommodation of invalids to enjoy the soothing thermal waters.

The Bath hotel is no longer accessible to the public since becoming a government building, but the grand exterior can still be seen from the thermal pools of the hot springs. The pools were created by the local restoration committee since the bath house is no longer safe, so that locals and tourists can continue to enjoy the hot springs on Nevis free of charge as they have for centuries.

Getting to the Hot Springs

To get to the hot springs on Nevis you can either get a local taxi to take you to the site or enjoy a short 10-minute walk from the capital city Charlestown if arriving by ferry from St Kitts. For more ways to get from St Kitts to Nevis check out this post.

When exiting the ferry terminal in Charlestown take the main road to the right and follow along past the market square. The local police and fire stations will be on the left, continue to the petrol station at the fork and take the right hand fork for a few more minutes into Bath Village. The hot springs are located on the left hand side of the road.

There is a small foot bridge going over the bath stream to a shop ran by locals where you can rent bowls, facecloths and buy cold bottled drinks. You will need a drink when you get out, although we would recommend taking your own water bottle to help save the planet.

The springs themselves are nothing fancy to look at and the main source of the spring is located in the bath house which is inaccessible due to the building damage. All that remains now are a few thermal pools that have been walled off to create the Nevis hot springs.

Be sure to wear your bathing suit and bring a towel for your visit as the site comprises four pools you can enter at varying temperatures between 98F and 108F. Not for the faint-hearted (literally) these springs require a bit of adjustment before plunging in to enjoy.

The locals who run the shop are happy to provide advice on how best to get in them without injury or dizziness. For just $1EC you can rent a bowl and a facecloth to help acclimatise to the temperature of the water. It’s not mandatory but we would recommend supporting the local community. Once you are in enjoy the thermal healing properties of the mineral rich waters and sooth away any aches and pains.
