If you’re a foodie like us this post will help you to discover the best restaurants St Kitts has to offer. As the smallest country in the America’s you may be surprised to hear that St Kitts is a secret haven for food fanatics.

We originally wrote this post in 2020 and some of our favourite restaurants didn’t survive the pandemic so after 4 years living in St Kitts we decided to revamp this post with new info for 2023 because we are still finding great new restaurants in St Kitts.

Best Restaurants in Basseterre, St Kitts

1. Palms Court Garden & Restaurant

Palms court garden is a lovely restaurant and has the added bonus that it also has a beautiful pool area overlooking the Caribbean sea where you can relax for an afternoon watching the boats in the port.

Palms Court also has lovely tropical gardens as the name suggests which you can stroll around or find a secluded spot for a romantic moment with your loved one.

The cuisine at Palm Courts is high quality and they specialize in local dishes with fish being one of our favourite choices. They also have a lovely cocktail menu and plenty of seating including hammocks and sun loungers, it is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion.

2. Kings Palace Chinese

Kings palace is a great hidden gem located upstairs in Port Zante in Basseterre. This lovely family run Chinese restaurant is very popular for takeout but never seems to be very busy when we dine in.

The food here is delicious with huge portions and very reasonably priced. The menu is extensive and has a great selection of vegetarian dishes and they will cater to special requests and dietary restrictions.

We took our vegan nephew here and there was plenty of menu options for him. Our top picks are the homemade spring rolls and the lo mein noodles.

3. Mrs Moores Eat To Live Snackette

This small converted shipping container is easy to miss in the hustle and bustle of Port Zante but it is 100% worth checking out. Mrs Moore offers one of the best local dining experiences in St Kitts.

A popular spot with locals and tourists for lunch, Mrs Moores Johnny Cakes are the best in St Kitts, they are huge and made into delicious filled sandwiches.

You can choose from various ingredients like chicken, cheese, veggie chunks, fried fish and saltfish which are served with lettuce and tomatoes or you can have it as a sweet treat plain or with cinnamon and raisins.

Whichever Johnny cake you choose it will be delicious, we love the chicken Johnny cake and we always have Mrs Moores homemade lemonade to wash it down. Johnny cakes are $4USD.

Mrs. Moore has been running this business for 29 years and she still does it all on her own, from cooking to cleaning and waiting on tables. Mrs Moores is a St Kitts restaurant not to be missed.

4. Serendipity

If you are looking for a romantic evening in St Kitts then Seredipity has the perfect atmosphere.

The menu has a good mix of local and international cuisine and it is always good quality food, we have been for special occassions such as valentines day and work christmas parties and never been disappointed.

For a higher end St Kitts restaurant the dishes are good value and the portion sizes are always good. We are always too full for dessert when we go here.

The owner Pauline is lovely and happy to cater to any special requests. We think Serendipity is one of the best restaurants in Basseterre and a must visit on any stay in St Kitts.

5. Michael’s Burgers

Michael’s Burgers serves up great quality homemade burgers with homemade rosemary fries and finished with homemade gelato- delicious!

It is the best place for burgers in St Kitts and the burgers are fantastic, they also do a beyond burger for vegans and an incredible chicken burger if you fancy a change from beef. My favourite is the Smokey Sparrow burger though which I highly recommend trying if you are undecided.

Don’t miss the awesome homemade gelato and if you have a four legged friend you can bring them for dog-friendly ice cream too. Our dog Roo loves it here because she’s always made a fuss of.

If you’re looking for where to eat in St Kitts when you first arrive, Michaels restaurant is walking distance from the airport, eat here and you won’t be disappointed!

Best Breakfast Restaurants St Kitts

6. Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove is one of the best places for breakfast in St Kitts with tasty food and good coffee or refreshing juices to help you start your day. It is a popular hangout for students and one of our favourite places for a casual dinner in St Kitts.

Julian the owner is super friendly and always greets us with a smile, the breakfast menu is limited but our favourite breakfast choice is the ham and cheese croissant teamed with the tiger lily smoothie.

Coconut grove is not just a breakfast restaurant, they serve food all day and night and have delicious burgers, tacos, burritos and pizzas, we always want to eat everything when we visit coconut grove.

I’d recommend the fish tacos or pizza if you are undecided.

They also have wonderful homemade cakes that you can take away if you are too full to try one after your meal.

7. Wok Nation

We know the name doesn’t suggest anything breakfast related but Wok Nation are a hidden gem and one of the best breakfast in St Kitts we have tried.

Tucked away in Birdrock, Wok Nation is popular with locals and we love the food here. It is always delicious and filling and they have real Italian coffee served from 7am daily.

The breakfast menu is extensive with pancakes, french toast, omelettes, bagels and much more on offer.

We have also visited in the evening and had the daily special meal which was Kung Po chicken with rice and it was amazing and great value.

8. Mr X’s Shiggidy Shack

Mr X’s Shiggidy Shack serves food all day but in our opinion the best time to visit Shiggidy Shack is Sunday morning when they do an excellent full English breakfast.

It is the only place to get a full English breakfast in St Kitts and it’s pretty darn good. Being English we often scrutinize English food abroad but Shiggidy Shack have nailed it.

The full English consists of English bacon and sausages, fried egg, baked beans, tomato, and toast. The portions are huge and we think its one of the best breakfast places in St Kitts.

One thing to note if you plan on visiting Shiggidy Shack for breakfast on Sunday is that it is cash only, so get cash out in advance.

9. Rituals Coffee House

Rituals Coffee house is the islands answer to Starbucks in St Kitts. This coffee shop in Frigate Bay is a great spot for breakfast in St Kitts with a large choice of breakfast items including pastries, breakfast burritos and bagels with different fillings.

The coffee list is extensive with hot and cold beverages available and a choice of milk including oat milk for vegans. Flavourings are not always available because of delays with things being shipped in but the service is relatively good for St Kitts.

Rituals is walking distance from the Marriott, Royal St Kitts and Timothy Beach hotels so if you want a change from the hotel breakfast then wander over here.

It is just a few doors down from coconut grove too so if they are closed or fully booked this is the next best option for breakfast St Kitts.

10. Sweet & Savory Bistro

If you are looking for the best breakfast St Kitts has to offer then Sweet and Savory wins the day. This small cafe is tucked away inside the Royal Plaza shopping area of the Royal St Kitts hotel and is one of the best restaurants in St Kitts for breakfast or lunch.

One of the best dining experiences is the Sunday brunch platter whihc has everything you can possibly imagine including pancakes, waffles, french toast, fruit, pastries and continental meats and cheeses.

It is a fantastic idea for special occassions in St Kitts and we had a fantastic time celebrating with our friends.

11. Fishermans Village at Park Hyatt

Sunday brunch at the Park Hyatt Fishermans Village in St Kitts is probably the most expensive breakfast option at $75US per person, but it is an all you can eat brunch buffet with bottomless mimosas so we think it’s worth the cost for a special treat.

The selection of food on offer is great including freshly baked bread and pastries and cook to order items like pancakes, waffles, omelettes and pasta dishes. There is also lots of other dishes like the national dish of St Kitts, stewed saltfish and dumplings to indulge on.

There is an a la carte menu for breakfast but it is incredibly disappointing and overpriced. Stick with the all you can eat buffet and you will be full and satisfied.

Top tip: the demand for mimosas can be high and the service can be very slow so keep reminding them when you need more drinks to get your moneys worth.

Best Vegan Restaurants in St Kitts

12. Ital Creations

Ital Creations is a food truck on an organic farm on the by pass road, near to the airport in St Kitts. It is the only completely vegan restaurant in St Kitts and it is fantastic.

As non-vegans we are alway super impressed by the flavours that Fari creates with his organic produce. We love the daily meal deals and always have some extra veggie nuggets because they are delicious.

They also have vegan sweet treats like coconut cakes and vegan chocolate chip cookies, wash down your meal with some freshly made moringa juice and take advantage of the free wifi on the farm.

Best Restaurants in Frigate Bay

13. Poinciana Restaurant

One of the best restaurants in Frigate Bay, Poinciana is a high end restaurant serving good quality food in a tranquil setting.

The menu is French inspired and has a good choice of dishes, it is one of the only places to eat in St Kitts that serves lamb.

We have eaten here on special occasions and with groups and the food is always delicious. It is not a cheap restaurant but it is worth the cost and the service is always very good.

We especially enjoy the homemade chocolate mousse for dessert and have even contemplated just going in to eat it.

14. Creole

Creole is a hidden gem restaurant in St Kitts because of it’s location it is not very busy most nights but it is popular for takeout and the food is amazing.

On week nights the owner cooks the food, waits the tables and serves the bar and it works really well. The food is local creole cuisine from around the Caribbean and it is done very well. The menu is very reasonably priced and has a good selection for vegetarians and meat eaters.

I love the coconut shrimp starter and the ribs and the lobster sandwich for main, everyone we have taken here has been impressed with the quality of the food and the size of the portions.

15. Indian Summer

Indian Summer is the best Indian restaurant in St Kitts and Nevis, the original restaurant on Nevis was one of our favourite places to eat in Nevis when we went on staycation. We were very excited to hear that they were opening a branch in St Kitts too in 2022 and it does not disappoint.

The owner Vik is originally from Mumbai and the food is authentic Indian cuisine that rivals any we have tried elsewhere in the world.

Try the homemade samosas, they are huge and stuffed with delicious filling, we usually have one portion to share to save room for the main course. The food is very high quality and the service is great.

I especially love the butter paneer with cheese garlic naan and I could eat it for days.

We have eaten here as a couple and in a group and the food is always amazing. The location is lovely too with the restaurant being upstairs with a nice breeze from across the golf course and the decor is bright and colourful with lots of Indian paintings and floaty fabrics.

Indian Summer really is one of the best restaurants in St Kitts and Nevis that you should visit on any trip.

16. Boozies on the Beach

Not to be confused with Boozies in Basseterre. This is the newer St Kitts restaurant Boozies on the Beach located on The Strip in Frigate Bay.

Boozies on the beach has a great menu wth things from lobster to pasta to burgers. It is close to what we brits like to call pub food so we love visiting and so does our family when they come to visit.

It is not super expensive and the food is always good quality although the service can be extremely slow at times (hello island time!) so don’t eat here if you are in a hurry to go somewhere.

The portion sizes are good and we have never left hungry.

The atmosphere is lovely with a laid back vibe and right on Frigate Bay South Beach making it a great place to watch the sunset over a few drinks while you wait for your meal.

They also have a huge selection of drinks including cocktails, imported and local beers and a good wine list.

17. Patsy’s Beach Bar and Grill

The location is great, right on the beach at Frigate Bay so perfect for watching the sunset or for relaxing during the day. Patsy’s is a popular spot for locals on the weekend and the food is good with big portions.

Patsy specializes in seafood dishes and the local lobster is amazing, it is also very reasonably priced and definitely one of the best places to eat in St Kitts.

The service can be on island time though which sometimes lets the place down but if you are in no hurry then it’s worth a visit. Grab a rum punch or two and soak up the atmosphere on the beach.

18. Vibes Beach Bar

Vibes beach bar is exactly what you would imagine a beach bar in the Caribbean to be like, rustic tables with reggae music playing and plenty of rum on offer.

The menu has a wide choice including sharing platters, burgers and local dishes. It’s very reasonably priced and they do a great local lunch special for only $17EC which has either chicken or fish with rice, salad or veggies.

If you are looking for cheap eats in St Kitts then this is the restaurant to visit. The atmosphere is friendly and can be bustling especially on a Friday night, grab a table on the beach for a quieter dining experience.

19. Shawarma King

Shawarma King started out as a fast food restaurant in the food court at Rams Cash and Carry, however it has now expanded to have it’s own lovely little restaurant in Frigate Bay.

It is easy to find on the main road leading to Frigate Bay but that does mean that it can be noisy. The restaurant has music playing and TV screens and there are some cute stray cats that like to share your food.

The delicious shawarmas are freshly made and very budget friendly. I would recommend the lamb shawarma with hot sauce and fries, grab one with a carib at one of the restaurant tables or take away to the nearest beach.

20. Rock Lobster Seafood and Grill

Rock Lobster is one of the most popular restaurants in St Kitts and has a mixture of Caribbean and international cuisine including fish and chips and Sunday roasts for the Brits!

The atmosphere is relaxing with tables inside and out, we always prefer to sit inside but if you want to sit outside then ask for a table away from the road as it can be quite noisy.

We have visited Rock Lobster on quite a few occassions and the food quality varies significantly, we have had some amazing meals and some mediocre meals too. For the price we think there are better places to eat in St Kitts.

21. Jam Rock

Jam Rock is a casual restaurant just off the strip in Frigate Bay, it has a classic Caribbean vibe which is not to be missed.

The menu has Caribbean flavours focusing on Jamaican tastes with one of their specialities being Jerk chicken and Jerk pork. Chef Michael is attentive and often comes out to ask how the food is.

It is the best place for Jerk chicken in St Kitts. There is a good choice on the menu with daily specials including catch of the day and the portion sizes are good and beautifully presented.

The service has been excellemt every time we have visited and we think the food is good value.

The Retreat in Frigate Bay

The Retreat in Frigate Bay is a great addition to the nightlife in St Kitts with a selection of bars, restaurants and dessert places set in a tranquil garden with palm trees, hibiscus flowers and a lovely little fish pond.

A popular hangout for students, The Retreat has ample seating and cute stray cats which are all fed by the restaurant owners and cared for by veterinary students.

Some of our favourite places in the Retreat are Michaels Gelato for a cheeky ice cream, Tasty Asian Cuisine for boba tea and Lotus Thai Bistro.

22. Lotus Thai Bistro

Lotus Thai is one of the best restaurants in St Kitts and certainly one of our favourites. We have never had a bad meal here but sometimes the service can be a little slow.

Some of our favourite dishes are the steamed dumplings to start and the chefs special duck curry is amazing! You can’t really go wrong with any dishes and they all come with the option of no spice, medium spicy, spicy or Thai spicy which is not for the faint hearted.

Pair your meal with a delicious Thai iced tea from the boba tea stand next door or a nice cold Carib. The menu is reasonably priced so it won’t break the bank and you can takeaway any leftovers.

Best Restaurants with a Seaview in St Kitts

23. Arthur’s

A wonderful hidden gem restaurant in St Kitts, Arthurs is located in Dieppe Bay and is part of the Belle Mont Farm development. Meaning you get their signature farm-to-table fresh food, in the case of Arthurs the speciality is seafood.

One of the best seafood restaurants in St Kitts we have driven all the way to Dieppe Bay just for the lobster sandwiches before.

During the week you can just show up and you are pretty much guaranteed to get a table, however on weekends it is incredibly busy especially on Sundays with locals visiting after church.

The food is delicious and a must visit restaurant in St Kitts on any visit. If you are staying in St Kitts we recommend making the trip up to Dieppe Bay more than once to sample the fresh seafood which is caught just off the coast in front of the restaurant.

24. Shipwreck Bar and Grill

Shipwreck bar located on south friar’s beach has some of the best fish tacos on the island and the meal deals with BBQ chicken and ribs are great value.

Enjoy a signature cocktail or a rum punch here overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It is also one of the best places to see the sunset on St Kitts and on Sunday there is live music to enjoy.

Be sure to take your swimwear so you can enjoy one of the best beaches in St Kitts after your meal. Or rent some snorkelling equipment and check out the house reef, one of the best snorkelling spots in St Kitts.

25. Reef Bar and Grill

Reef bar and grill (Mugsys) is located at the far north of the island in Dieppe Bay, next to Arthur’s restaurant.

Mugsy is a local fisherman who cooks what he catches that day. The restaurant itself is a shack on the beach, surrounded by fishing boats and with an assortment of tables and benches.

For an authentic local experience this is as real as it gets. We love driving up to Mugsys with some beers and sitting on the fishing dock over the Caribbean Sea while we wait for our lobster.

For the best lobster in St Kitts you need to visit Mugsy but we recommend calling before making the trip because he runs out quickly.

The price is $30US for lobster, wedges and garlic bread but there is always plenty.

26. Salt Plage

Salt plage In 2015 salt plage was named as one of the best beachside cafes in the world and for good reason!

It is a popular hangout for celebrities, the atmosphere oozes sophistication here with a large colourful deck and hammocks over the Caribbean Sea, as part of Christophe harbour lots of rich and famous like to dock and dine here.

So grab some cocktails and watch the sunset or do some celebrity spotting. Also check out the full moon party once a month with live entertainment

27. Reggae Beach Bar and Grill

Reggae Beach bar and grill is on the beautiful Cockleshell Beach and is the perfect beach bar to spend the whole day at soaking up the sun and swimming in the perfect Caribbean Sea.

Rush slowly is their moto and this bustling beach bar is a great place to have lunch or an evening meal. The food is very good but it is not cheap, you pay for the location as much as the food.

For the best value be sure to check out Lobster Fest every Friday night. Lobster Fest is a feast where you can pick any 3 meat or fish and choose from a selection of unlimited vegetables, salad, rice, plantain and johnny cakes. The price is $50 USD ($132 EC) per person but it is worth every cent.

Lobster Fest also has brilliant music from local musicians and a beach bonfire to end the night. Try some of the delicious cocktails, the BBC is our favourite, it’s amazing!

28. Sprat Net

Sprat net is a seafood restaurant ran by a local family of fisherman, the fresh seafood is what most people go for although the pizza is pretty good too. It is one of our favourite places to eat in St Kitts and an experience not to be missed.

The lobster and fish is all freshly caught on the day and the chicken and ribs are locally sourced. The meat and fish is barbequed and all BBQ dishes come with sides of baked potato, corn on the cob, garlic bread and johnny cakes.

The food is ticketed on a first come first served basis and you have to go to the kitchen area to place your order once you have paid at the bar.

Spratnet get very busy from 7pm onwards so we recommend getting there early unless you are happy to wait over an hour for food.

For the best experience go on a Wednesday or Friday for the live band and arrive around 5.30pm to catch the sunset!

Fine Dining St Kitts

29. Spice Mill

Spice Mill is perfect for a romantic meal in St Kitts with fantastic views overlooking Nevis which in an evening is lit up beautifully.

The food is a mix of Caribbean favourites and international dishes and the menu changes frequently so no two visits are the same. They are open for lunch and dinner and have a pizza oven for woodfired pizza which is great.

The food is always really good but it is expensive, it is worth it for the location, right on the white sand Cockleshell beach with the spectacular views of Nevis, which is fantastic.

Be sure to try the signature Hi-Biscus rum cocktails, some of the best alcoholic drinks in St Kitts. The rum is made on the premises and you can take a tour of the brewing/distilling area to see where it is made.

30. The Pavilion Beach Club

The Pavilion Beach Club is the best fine dining restaurant in St Kitts. It is expensive but worth it for a special occasion or honeymoon in St Kitts.

Luxury dining at its best, The Pavilion is part of the exclusive Christophe Harbour development, the locally inspired food is delicious, with great service and the atmosphere is incredible. As with most fine dining the portion sizes are small though but the food is tasty.

If you are dining at lunch time you can also take a dip in the infinity pool and while away the afternoon by the pool with a few cocktails overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

31. Rituals Sushi

Rituals sushi is often referred to as the best sushi on St Kitts. The choice of sushi rolls is immense so be prepared to browse the menu for a while. If you can’t decide then we recommend the Love Boat which is the largest sushi platter they offer.

Rituals is our favourite place to eat in St Kitts and our go-to place for special occasions. We think it deserves the crown of the best restaurant in St Kitts.

The Love Boat is our favourite dish and includes 7 different types of rolls from the extensive menu, each roll has 8 pieces of sushi so we always make sure to only have a small lunch.

The sushi is very good quality and easily comparable to sushi we have had in the UK or US. They also do terriyaki dishes, fied noodles, fried rice, large ramen or soba soups, and bento boxes if sushi isn’t your thing.

Be sure to try the homemade iced tea or one of the amazing cocktails and save room for the homemade green tea ice cream or deep-fried ice cream.

32. The Stone Barn

The Stone Barn is located inside the Park Hyatt Resort and is a formal adult only dining experience serving contemporary European dishes. We love the fact it is adult only and the atmosphere is wonderful and relaxing.

The food is delicious and beautifully presented but the portions are not massive. The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic evening meal however, it is very expensive, so we only recommend booking for very special occasions.

There is also the option to have a private dining experience in one of the waterfall side cabanas which would be great for couples on honeymoon in St Kitts looking for a unique dining experience.

33. The Kitchen at Belle Mont Farm

Belle Mont Farm hotel is one of the best places to stay in St Kitts and they offer a signature farm to table dining experience which is not to be missed.

The Kitchen at Belle Mont prides itself on organically grown and farmed seasonal local produce and every dish is carefully chosen to use only sustainable ingredients. They only serve freshly caught seafood from local fishermen, free-range meat from local farmers and their home grown fruit and vegetables which are farmed on the premises.

The location is stunning with views of the lush green jungle and Mount Liamiuga, dropping down to the Atlantic Ocean below.

Insider tip- One thing to be aware of when eating out in St Kitts is that many of the restaurants add the government tax onto the bill rather than including it in the menu price. It’s 12% and some places add on a 10% service charge too so watch out for this when calculating how much to leave as a tip.

Food Courts in St Kitts

We think another worthy mention for St Kitts restaurants are the food courts in St Kitts, currently there are 4 to choose from but there seems to be more popping up every year. Eating at the food court is a budget friendly option for locals and expats in St Kitts as dining out can be expensive because of the high import costs affecting the cost of living in St Kitts.

Two are operated by the local Rams supermarkets one located in Bird Rock by the Rams cash and carry, the other is located in West Farm.

The third food court is located in Port Zante and is popular with cruise ship passengers visiting St Kitts.

The four and newest addition is also in Bird Rock and is located next to O.D. Brisbane cash and carry. This one has our favourite noodle restaurant in St Kitts it’s called Kings Fried Chicken and the food is delicious and the portion sizes are huge! We usually share one Kings Fried noodle dish between us.

All four food courts have different food trucks, which are converted shipping containers, with lots of choice for cuisine, they are all geared for take-out.

You can choose from pizza, noodles, burgers, Caribbean and even sushi to name a few. It is worth checking out if you are on a budget or if you don’t want to eat in a fancy restaurant in St Kitts.

You can sit and eat at them though as there is ample seating with wooden benches if you want to sit and eat your food fresh. The food court in Port Zante has tables and chairs in the small courtyard area next to the pool and bar.

The only downside in our opinion is that the food is all packaged up in a polystyrene containers with plastic cutlery. So it’s worth taking your own container and silverware to help be more zero-waste and save the planet 😊

What Food is St Kitts Known For?

St Kitts and Nevis national dish is stewed saltfish paired with spicy plantains and coconut dumplings with optional seasoned breadfruit. The signature dish of St Kitts and Nevis was created in 2003 by Jacqueline Ryan for the 20th Anniversary of their Independence.

We are not huge fans of saltfish but our friends highly recommend Freshco by Independance square as the best place to eat try it, unfortunately it is one of their specials so they don’t serve it everyday.

Palms Court Garden also have saltfish but they only serve it with fried dumplings not the traditional boiled dumplings, they are still delicious though and worth trying.

Typically stewed saltfish and dumplings will cost $30XCD.

You can also get saltfish pizza from Pizza Boys which is quite nice for a change.

Stewed saltfish and dumplings is arguably the most popular food in St Kitts and Nevis but like most Caribbean islands there is also a big culture surrounding variations of BBQ chicken, ribs or fish served with rice and salad.

Other local specialities include johnny cakes, cook-up, conch fritters and goat water soup but there are many other types of cuisine around the island catering for everyone’s tastes and budget.

Can you drink the water in St. Kitts?

Yes, the tap water is safe to drink in St Kitts. It is chlorinated and treated but it does have a high mineral content as it comes from the mountain, so some people like to filter it before drinking.

Most restaurants will also filter the tap water before serving. So ask for iced tap water with your meal which is free everywhere rather than paying for expensive bottled water and save a few dollars on your restaurant bill.

St Kitts Restaurant Week

Every year during the second week of July, various restaurants in St Kitts and Nevis take part in Restaurant week.

Throughout the week there are lots of special offers on food including 3-course menu offers for $40 or $60USD and there is always a theme around a local fruit or vegetable. Each restaurant that takes part creates special dishes for the week all featuring the themed local produce.

Previous themes have included mangoes, sweet potato, plantain and this year is pineapple. Check out the restaurant week website to find out which restaurants are taking part and the dishes they are showcasing.
